Lifting / Solvent Aggression

The topcoat dissolves the underlying layer, leading to wrinkling, swelling, or bubbling.

Description:

Lifting or solvent aggression is usually caused by unsuitable painting conditions or incompatible paint layers.

Cause:

  1. The topcoat is applied before the underlying layer has dried.
  2. Insufficient evaporation time between layers.
  3. Poor solvent resistance of the undercoat or too strong a solvent in the topcoat.
  4. Poor adhesion of the underlying layer.
  5. Coats applied too thickly.

Repair:

  1. Lightly sand the affected area, seal the surface, and repaint.
  2. Be especially careful with sensitive substrates: keep each coat thin and allow sufficient evaporation time.
  3. If the lifting is severe, completely remove the affected area and reapply the entire paint system.
